Lokma is easy Turkish dessert with some very simple ingredients.  It is usually made to celebrate happy events in Turkey.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp instant dry yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • Sunflower oil for frying
  • For syrup:
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Method

Step 1

First, prepare the syrup. In a pot, add water and sugar and bring to a boil.

Step 2

Let it boil for about 15 minutes until it gets a little sticky. Add the lemon juice and simmer for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and cool.

Step 3

In a cup, add yeast and sugar to warm water. Stir until dissolved.

Step 4

In a mixing bowl, add flour, salt and yeast water, knead the ingredients until the dough is runny.

Step 5

Cover and let it rest in a warm place for one hour, until it has doubled its size.

Step 6

Heat the oil in a frying pan.

Step 7

Take some dough in your hand and squeeze it so that you see a small amount between your thumb and forefinger. Dip a teaspoon into a little oil and use it to drop that rounded bit of dough into boiling oil.

Step 8

Allow to cook for about 2 minutes each side, until each side is a golden brown color. Repeat the same steps until you finish the dough.

Step 9

Remove fried dough from oil and immediately place in cold syrup.

Step 10

Let it sit in cold syrup for 5-10 minutes. If you leave long time it can be more sweeter. Enjoy!
